A Nice Fall Day

Feels like Fall

I painted at this location on two days in a row.  First day was nice, fairly warm and no wind. The second day started out ok but a weather front moved in and it got more overcast and windy as the morning went on. I was glad I chose a smaller format since it wasn't long before the wind picked up and the temperature went down. I was glad I had the previous day to capture this scene with some sun.

Kirkwood Farmers Market

Fall is here!

Mums
6x8 plein air oil
sold

The Kirkwood farmers market is so colorful year round but in fall it's at its best.  Lots of pumpkins of all colors and the end of the season garden bounty.  But my favorite are the soft round mums that make the season look fresh as spring in it's cheerful but muted colors.

Custard Station

Back to the Brush

6x8 oil
The Custard Station

Painted in Kirkwood this morning and decided to go back to using the brush and give the palette knife a rest.  This little custard stand has the best frozen custard and usually has a long line and crowd gathered around it.  It wasn't open yet while I was painting but the light was bright on the awning and the dark fence under the shade tree made a dramatic contrast that caught my eye.  I had a good time!

Trying a Different Approach

Palette Knife Painting

I have used the palette knife when I have painted before but never totally without using the brush also.  So I thought I'd give it a try.  The top painting went nicely with those clouds puffing up in the sky.  The bottom painting was much more difficult trying to carve out the barges on the river. I had fun giving the palette knife a try and will continue to practice using it.  I will have to try some other sizes and shapes.

JB Park

Jefferson Barracks Park

Before the Rain
6x8 oil

I was about halfway on this small study when the sky started changing in every direction, every few seconds it seemed.  It had beautiful color and light but constantly changing.  I started painting faster trying to get down the most dramatic lighting.  When I heard thunder and that dark cloud overtook the majority of the sky I knew I better pack it up.  Just as I got everything in the car, the rain came.

Spring

Along the Creek

6x8 oil sketch
sold
It's been overcast and cloudy days lately and finally a day with a promise of sun.  I like to paint in a few different spots along Gravois Creek so headed there for some peaceful paint time.  Alas no sun just overcast clouds.  I did this little sketch and just as I was near finishing blocking it in the sun came out and lit the side of that house across the way.  I quickly made the changes necessary to show that beautiful light.  I "chased the light" in this case and was glad I did. A capture worth waiting for.

Winter is Long

Studio Time

A Clearing Sky
8x10 oil

It's been cold and cloudy days lately and hard to get out to do plein air painting but for a few brief outings.  Going through some of those quick paintings I remembered this one that was started on a rainy morning under a shelter.  Just as it was about time that I had to leave the sky started clearing up.  I quickly did a few changes to indicate the changed light but was unable to finish the painting at that time.  So I worked on it in the studio this week and think I captured that light effect that I remembered from that day. I love to see the sun peek out after heavy clouds start to depart.
