Kirkwood Farmer's Market

Fall at the Market

"Pumpkins and Bales"
8x10 plein air oil
sold

Unseasonably warm weather today seemed out of place with all the fall produce and decorations for the upcoming holidays of fall.  It felt more like a hot, humid day in summer.  But the colors of fall were inspiring to paint this symbol of the season and that fall chill in the air soon to come.

Hot Breezy Day

Summer Breeze by the River

sold

The temperatures were in the upper 90's and the only bearable place to paint was under the main shelter.  There was a gusty wind from there but worth the cooling relief that it brought.  Looking across these willows caught my eye and the grasses in front of them were waving in the breeze.  I never noticed the heat once I started painting and finished up just as the wind calmed down.

The first two days of the Steelville Plein Air event took place in and around the St. James area.  I found myself drawn both days to scenes that looked out from wooded areas.  This time of year is a great time to spend in the woods.  Nature is alive and active with beautiful views in every direction.

Virginia

The Blue Ridge Mountains
6x8 plein air oil
Shenandoah National Park
sold
Drove the Skyline Drive through the park and the views were amazing.  So many overlooks and each one just as awesome as the next.  The blue color of the mountains is so beautiful.  Loved this place.

Occoquan, Virginia

Occoquan River

This little island in the river was a gathering place for mallards.  Had a nice time visiting friends in this charming town.  The river flows into the Potomac which flows into the Chesapeake Bay.

Cider House at Greenfield Village

Had a hard time finding a place to paint as it was very crowded with many school field trips on this day.  Set up in front of this beautiful wheat field and the cider house behind.  The village is a sustainable farm and is an amazing place to see.  Also it is located next to the Henry Ford Museum which houses incredible collections of all kinds.

Put In Bay, Bass Island, Ohio
6x8 plein air oil
The Niagra
sold
Loved this old ship anchored in the bay.  It was bright and sunny but very windy which is always a challenge when painting on the spot.  There is an International Peace Monument on the Island that from the top the view is amazing.  Several other islands can be seen plus Canada.  A perfect day.

Paint Webster

"Busch's Spring"
8x10 plein air oil
 Urban Senior Award
sold
Yesterday was the Paint Webster annual plein air event.  I chose to paint the spring near Blackburn Park because of the historical significance to my family.  My grandmother's childhood home was on a farm in this immediate area and this spring was their water source.  I have a photo from the 1880's that shows some of the children standing on the top of the spring and amazingly it looks nearly unchanged today.  It's a bird sanctuary now and part of Blackburn park in Webster Groves.
At the award reception for the event, I was happy to receive the "Urban Senior Award" and this painting will be on show at the Old Orchard Gallery until May 18th.

A Day to Remember

SUGAR CREEK WINERY
8x10 plein air oil
Wine and Roses
Honorable Mention
The day started out hot and sunny and I found a spot in the shade to paint these roses by the vineyard.  It wasn't long before the clouds rolled in and thunder was heard in the distance.  I painted a little faster so I could frame and enter before the rain came.  Soon we were told there was a severe storm approaching and the sky was ominous looking with that green tinge before a storm.  Everyone got inside in time and all the paintings were safe also.  It certainly was a day to remember and one I'll always remember at my first Augusta Plein Air event!

I was honored to receive a 3rd place award at the Augusta Plein Air event today.
I chose this place to paint because I love the newly planted fields with just a hint of the crop coming up.  It's such a promise of hope for a good harvest.

SUNNY AFTERNOON

Cliff Cave Shelter

I walked around looking for something to catch my eye to paint and also be out of the bright sun and wind when I just looked up and saw the light on the shelter.  I set up in the shade of a tree and I think I was able to capture the feeling of a sunny afternoon at the park.  I painted on a different surface than I normally use and it took the paint differently.  I'm ok with the result but not sure I'll use it again.

Bluffs

The Bluffs at Cliff Cave

Painted along the railroad tracks at Cliff Cave Park last week.
I did not know you need to be 100 feet from the tracks until I got a warning from the railroad police.
I was only about half finished with the painting so had to finish it from memory after I got home.

Early Spring

Flood Patterns

Cliff Cave Park
6x8 plein air oil

The sand that washed along the riverbank is just as soft as any tropical beach.  The wavy pattern shows how far the current washed it over the normal riverbank.  The trees look as if they were rearing back to avoid the intrusive waters.  After receding the signs left behind tell the story of the ever changing Mississippi River.
